To reduce man-animal conflict, Maharashtra’s Forest Department has begun installing AI-enabled cameras in leopard-prone zones of Nashik and Pune. These motion-sensor cameras identify leopards and send real-time alerts to forest officials and local residents via SMS and WhatsApp groups. The AI system also records behavioral patterns—tracking travel routes, active hours, and potential den sites. Since installation, there’s been a 40% reduction in conflict incidents. Villagers now know when to avoid forest fringes and alert authorities faster. Animal rescue teams have intercepted leopards before they enter human settlements. The success of this low-cost system has prompted plans to deploy it in Vidarbha and Marathwada, with hopes of better co-existence between humans and wildlife in agrarian landscapes.
